Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins has enacted a new law providing free park passes to U.S. military veterans residing in the county. This legislation aims to acknowledge veterans' contributions by granting them complimentary access to Westchester's parks and recreational facilities.
Jenkins emphasized the importance of recognizing veterans, stating, “Veterans have given so much to protect our freedoms, and it is our responsibility to show our gratitude in meaningful ways. Signing this legislation into law ensures that all veterans feel recognized and valued. Our parks provide opportunities for relaxation, connection, and healing, and this initiative opens those benefits to every veteran in our County.”
The Westchester County Board of Legislators approved the bill, removing financial barriers for veterans seeking park passes. Chairman Vedat Gashi highlighted the bipartisan support for the initiative: “Such enthusiastic bipartisan support from legislators reflects the gratitude we all feel for these important community members.”
Legislator Erika Pierce expressed pride in supporting local veterans: “We are so proud to have veterans here in Westchester County. We value them, their families and the skills they contribute to our communities. We wanted to find a way to give back to them, especially those who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford visiting our beautiful parks.”
John Nonna, a veteran and County Attorney, appreciated the gesture: “This is a thank you that goes a very long way, and as a veteran I am grateful. Whether it’s hiking along scenic trails, spending time with family in nature or participating in community programs, veterans now have enhanced access to this award-winning County park system.”
Kathy O’Connor from the Department of Parks shared her excitement about the new opportunity for veterans: "Our veterans deserve our utmost gratitude and support. I am thrilled that they will now have the opportunity to apply for our resident park passes for free so they can enjoy our parks at discounted rates."
Ron Tocci of Veterans Service Agency noted how this legislation aligns with ongoing efforts: “The passage of this legislation reflects the County’s ongoing commitment to honoring and supporting its veteran community. By removing the financial barrier to enjoying County parks, the bill acknowledges the sacrifices made by veterans while promoting their physical health, mental well-being and connection to the community."
This measure expands an existing program offering free park passes specifically for disabled service-connected veterans.
