Westchester County officials have shared guidance for residents to ensure a safe Thanksgiving celebration. County Executive George Latimer emphasized the importance of responsible behavior during the holiday season, advising people to "drive, cook and drink responsibly" and to allow extra time for travel due to increased traffic.

Latimer highlighted the significance of following health guidelines when hosting gatherings. He stated, “When hosting, follow the Health Department’s food safety advice and when enjoying your meal, avoid excess and let moderation be your guide.”

For those preparing turkey, proper defrosting is crucial. The recommended method is thawing it in a refrigerator pan over several days—one day for every four to five pounds. A 16-pound turkey would require four days. It is advised not to wash the turkey before cooking as this can spread germs.

Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler stressed the importance of hand hygiene amid circulating viruses and flu season. She advised: “Wash hands thoroughly after exchanging greetings and before you take that first bite.”

Dr. Amler also recommended vaccinations for residents aged six months and older, including flu shots and COVID vaccines. Pregnant women are encouraged to consider an RSV vaccine for protection during respiratory virus season.

“It’s a good idea to get these vaccines now," Amler continued, "before large family gatherings... Remember, if you are under the weather, stay home to help keep others healthy.”

COVID-19 vaccines and flu shots are accessible at various pharmacies and medical practices. The Vaccine Finder Tool can assist residents in locating nearby vaccination sites. The County Health Department provides COVID vaccines at clinics for eligible children and uninsured or underinsured adults.

To promote healthier holidays, incorporating exercise such as a turkey trot or long walk is suggested. When cooking, using herbs instead of salt and reducing fat and sugar in recipes can enhance healthiness.
