Westchester County is undergoing a transition in leadership following the resignation of County Executive George Latimer. According to Westchester County Communications Director Catherine Cioffi, Latimer resigned at 12:01 p.m., and shortly after, at 12:02 p.m., Richard Wishnie was appointed as Acting County Executive by the Chairman of the Westchester County Board of Legislators, Vedat Gashi.

Wishnie, who currently serves as Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services, will hold this temporary position until January 6. On that date, the Board of Legislators is set to meet to vote on a new County Executive and schedule a special election.

Cioffi stated that "Commissioner Wishnie is a lifelong public servant; however, he will not be seeking the role of County Executive." The special election must occur within 90 days following Latimer's resignation. The winner will serve as County Executive through December 31, 2025.

Cioffi acknowledged potential confusion regarding this process but emphasized that it follows guidelines established by the County Charter from 1937. She expressed gratitude for Wishnie's service and Deputy County Executive Ken Jenkins' support during this transition period.

The statement concluded with reassurance from Cioffi: "As dedicated public servants, we in the Executive Branch deeply value the residents of Westchester County and the hardworking County employees who keep our community thriving."
