Westchester County has taken a significant step in its sustainability efforts by installing 25 new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at the County Center’s South Parking Lot. These stations, funded through a $115,000 Clean Energy Communities Grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), offer free charging for up to 50 electric vehicles simultaneously.

The initiative supports Westchester's commitment to clean energy adoption and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The charging stations are accessible at no cost to event attendees, mass transit commuters, Bicycle Sunday participants, and visitors to the Bronx River Parkway Reservation walk and bike trail. This effort aligns with the County’s Climate Action Plan aimed at reducing emissions and expanding access to clean energy infrastructure. The Hudson Valley Regional Council collaborated with the County in implementing this program.

Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins stated: “Providing free EV charging at the County Center is another way Westchester is leading the charge on sustainability. We are committed to making it easier for residents and visitors to transition to clean energy transportation while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality.”

Peter L. McCartt, Director of Energy Conservation and Sustainability, remarked: “This initiative is about making electric vehicle use more accessible and convenient for our County. Expanding our EV charging infrastructure is a practical step toward a greener Westchester, and we are proud to be taking action to support clean energy adoption."

Board of Legislators Chairman Vedat Gashi commented: "Expanding EV charging is a key step in our efforts to keep our air clean, support our local economy, and make environmentally friendly transportation accessible to all Westchester residents."

County Legislator David J. Tubiolo added: "This initiative not only promotes the use of clean energy but also embraces technology to provide a greener, more sustainable future for our community."

County Legislator Erika L. Pierce noted: "As the County Center continues to draw more people for its varied programs, adding free EV charging...encourages residents to drive EVs."

White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach shared his personal experience with electric vehicles: “My family is all-electric...These charging stations are a tremendous asset for both White Plains and the County.”

With this investment, Westchester aims at reducing transportation-related emissions while offering convenient charging options for those who live or visit the region. The county plans further expansion of its EV network.

The parking lots at the County Center require permits unless using an EV charger; details can be found on their website.
