In preparation for the start of their Kindness Campaign, students at the Alice E. Grady Elementary School went on a Kindness Quest, thanks to Prismatic Magic. Using lasers and music, Jesse Gruberg, aka The Laser Guy, helped teach students a valuable lesson on what it means to be kind.

When Mr. Gruberg explained that he would be sharing a laser light show, students screamed with excitement.

“The most important thing I need is to give you a laser light show,” he said, once the students had quieted down.

Students were introduced to Max Bravado who appeared in the form of a laser on a large screen. Mr. Bravado proceeded to lead students on a quest, first to the Temple of Gloom.

It was here that the character introduced the concept of self-awareness, or “knowing what is going on inside of you,” Mr. Gruberg said.

As Mr. Bravado attempted to leave the Temple of Gloom, he found three keys and needed to decipher which one would open the door so he could escape. The keys, and lock, appeared in laser form as students shouted out which key and lock would work together.

“We used awareness to solve the key riddle,” Mr. Gruberg said after Mr. Bravado had escaped.

Mr. Bravado’s quest continued, next in Radiant City where he met several superheroes that shared with him the power of empathy. As students learned from their laser friends, empathy is “knowing someone’s feelings.”

“Having empathy is an important step in being kind,” Mr. Gruberg said.

In his last adventure, Mr. Bravado was launched into space. Here he meets a robot that is lonely. He shows compassion to the robot by deciding to stay with him.

“Compassion is the motivation inside to do something kind,” Mr. Gruberg said.

“Self-awareness plus empathy plus compassion equals kindness,” he said.

The assembly was just one of several activities to take place during weeklong Kindness Campaign, celebrated Feb. 13 through 17.

Teachers were encouraged to nominate students they felt exemplified kindness to others. Tokens were also given out to students who were caught engaging in acts of kindness, or they could tear off a ticket that suggested a specific random kind act to do. The school also took advantage of Valentine’s Day and sold Hershey chocolate bars to send to friends.
