Westchester County's Department of Environmental Facilities (DEF) is conducting a Waste Reduction Study in collaboration with Barton & Loguidice, a consulting firm. This initiative aims to guide waste reduction efforts over the next decade by engaging local businesses in promoting a circular economy.
The study seeks input from commercial establishments across the county to identify opportunities and barriers in adopting circular economy strategies. Business owners and managers can participate through an online survey at https://arcg.is/0aGWTW.
Previously, DEF released a Waste Reduction Survey for residents, initiated by the Board of Legislators as part of the 2024 Refuse Disposal District budget. That survey remains accessible at https://arcg.is/GDn8u0 or via DEF's Facebook page.
County Executive Ken Jenkins emphasized the importance of business involvement, stating: “Westchester County is committed to reducing waste and finding new, sustainable ways to manage our resources. Businesses play a critical role in this effort, and their input will help shape the future of waste reduction strategies in our communities.”
Legislator Erika L. Pierce highlighted economic benefits: “Waste reduction isn’t just good for the environment — it’s good for business. By participating in this study, commercial establishments can help identify practical solutions that will benefit both their operations and the greater community.”
DEF Commissioner Vincent Kopicki stressed adaptation and growth: “Staying at the forefront of waste reduction requires constant adaptation and growth. Input from Westchester County businesses will provide essential insights to help further promote a circular economy. Whether you are a small business or a large business, your perspective matters and we want to hear from you.”
First Deputy Commissioner Louis Vetrone noted the significance of business input: “Businesses are a vital piece of the fabric of Westchester County. DEF wants to learn more about the barriers businesses face in promoting a circular economy and, importantly, the potential opportunities to support waste reduction and adopt circular economy strategies."
Westchester County has been recognized for its leadership in waste reduction since 2005, having reduced disposed waste by over 27% while maintaining recycling rates above 50%. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's Solid Waste Management Plan sets an ambitious goal for an 85% recycling rate statewide by 2050, which aligns with Westchester's objectives.
