Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins held a press briefing to discuss the impending storm expected to affect the region on February 6. The weather event is anticipated to impact travel, particularly during the Thursday morning commute, with a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain forecasted.
The snow is expected to begin after 1 AM and become more likely after 4 AM. As the morning progresses, it will transition into a wintry mix and eventually plain rain from south to north by late Thursday morning into the afternoon.
Jenkins warned of hazardous travel conditions due to snow-covered and icy roads, especially those that are untreated. He advised residents to "be prepared for slippery roads," urging them to slow down and exercise caution while traveling. For updates on road conditions, he recommended checking the NYS Department of Transportation's 511NY service.
He further advised waiting until roads are cleared before traveling if conditions appear dangerous. Jenkins emphasized taking care when stepping outside onto potentially icy surfaces like stairs, sidewalks, and driveways to prevent falls and injuries. He also encouraged residents to "be a good neighbor" by assisting those who might need help preparing or cleaning up after the storm.
In Northern Westchester, forecasts predict 1 to 2 inches of snow with up to 0.03 inches of ice accumulation possible. In Southern Westchester, similar snowfall amounts are expected but with little to no ice accumulation anticipated.
