Westchester County has secured a $250,000 grant from Empire State Development’s Market New York program to support the "Rooted in Westchester" initiative. This effort aims to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States' independence in 2026 by highlighting Westchester's historical significance, particularly its role in the American Revolution. The county will match the grant with an additional 50% funding.
Ken Jenkins, Westchester County Executive, expressed optimism about the project: “This investment into our region will help us continue to grow significantly in many ways, ensuring that Westchester is seen not only as a destination for modern attractions but also as a place where history lives on."
The grant will fund two immersive events scheduled for 2025 and 2026 at select parks in Westchester County. These events are designed to celebrate and educate about the area's historical heritage while boosting tourism marketing efforts. The initiative also includes creating dynamic online content to inform visitors about Westchester's history.
Natasha Caputo, Director of Westchester County Tourism & Film, emphasized the long-term vision: “As we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, we are excited to offer new ways for travelers and locals to connect with history and explore the beauty of Westchester."
"Rooted in Westchester" will be organized with local partners such as Revolutionary Westchester 250 (RW250) and other historical organizations. Constance Kehoe, President of RW250, stated: “We are thrilled to collaborate with Westchester County Tourism & Film on programs that bring the history of the American Revolution to life in Westchester."
Sean Meade from the Westchester Hotel Association noted that these events would highlight what the county offers: “Special events like these showcase the best of what our County has to offer."
New York State Historian Devin R. Lander added that this initiative would enhance regional heritage tourism: “This effort will help enhance our region’s image as a significant heritage and historical destination."
The Market New York program supports various marketing initiatives aimed at promoting tourism destinations across New York State. This particular project is part of broader efforts to revitalize travel post-COVID-19 while supporting local businesses.
Westchester County Tourism & Film continues its mission to promote economic benefits by positioning itself as a premier business and leisure destination within Hudson Valley.
