The Westchester County Youth Bureau recently gathered with other youth bureaus across New York State for the annual Youth Leadership Forum in Albany. This free event, aimed at young individuals aged 12 and older, provided participants with leadership training and educational opportunities over two days. Students attended seminars and workshops at the Empire State Plaza before meeting individually with New York State representatives to discuss funding for key initiatives such as after-school programming, youth employment opportunities, and swimming facilities.
The forum aims to empower young attendees by enhancing their communication skills and confidence, enabling them to become effective advocates. More than 200 youths participated, many from high-risk or marginalized backgrounds. The activities included teambuilding exercises and discussion groups on citizenship, social justice, mental health, and substance use disorders.
NYS Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins commented: “It is always a privilege to welcome the passionate young leaders of Westchester to Albany for Youth Advocacy Day... I enjoyed the opportunity to hear directly from our young advocates... Their voices matter, and their advocacy is shaping a brighter future for New York.”
Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins stated: “So many people believe that government is an abstract notion... I can’t think of a better way to teach our young people that good government is about interaction between residents and those who legislate than this leadership and advocacy forum.”
Ernest McFadden, Executive Director of the Westchester County Youth Bureau, remarked: “The Westchester County Youth Bureau... enthusiastically attended this year’s annual Youth Leadership Forum... We believe that youth voice is critical to the ongoing success of our programming.”
Scarsdale High School senior Kamila El Moselhy shared her experience: “The New York State Legislators are incredibly supportive... Coming to Albany for the past two years has made me feel seen and gives me an opportunity to represent my community.”
