Kenneth W. Jenkins sworn in as Westchester's first Black County Executive

Westchester County marked a significant occasion as Kenneth W. Jenkins took the oath as County Executive, becoming the first Black person to hold the position. The inauguration held at Westchester Community College attracted numerous dignitaries and community leaders.

Dr. Belinda Miles, President of Westchester Community College, opened the event with a speech connecting the college's mission to Jenkins' educational vision. The Emerald Society Pipes and Drums then played, contributing to the ceremonial ambiance.

New York State Senator Shelley Mayer managed the proceedings, which included the Westchester County Police Department's Presentation of Colors and County Clerk Tim Idoni leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Religious blessings were offered by Bishop Troy P. DeCohen and Imam Shaffieq Chace.

Remarks were made by prominent figures such as U.S. Senate Democratic Leader Charles E. Schumer, U.S. Congressman George Latimer, State Governor Kathy Hochul, State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, and local Democratic Committee Chair Suzanne Berger. A video featuring messages from U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and others augmented the event.

The program included a poetry reading by Westchester County Poet Laureate Phylisha Villanueva, accompanied by a performance from the Calvary Baptist Church Youth Choir. Jenkins' career was highlighted through a video showcasing his dedication to public service.

The swearing-in was conducted by The Honorable Kathie E. Davidson. In his subsequent speech, Jenkins reiterated his commitment to Westchester's future, emphasizing themes of stability and unity. He stated, "You voted for stability, competency, and civility. You voted to chart a course that reflects our highest ideals."

Concluding prayers were given by Arun Bhagirath from the Hindu Temple of Tri-State and Rabbi Leora Frankel, followed by a reception at the David Swope Student Center, celebrating the new leadership.
