Westchester County has announced a new initiative called the “Seen, Safe, Supported: Westchester Stands with You” campaign. The program, created by County Executive Ken Jenkins, seeks to reassure gender-diverse residents that they are not alone in their experiences of threat, harassment, or need for support. This campaign aligns with International Transgender Day of Visibility, emphasizing the importance of community inclusivity.
Ken Jenkins expressed the campaign's intent, stating, "Together, we celebrate visibility, promote understanding, and build a community where everyone can live authentically and without fear." Jenkins emphasized that visibility is just the start of the support offered, highlighting resources for those facing discrimination or in need of assistance.
The campaign identifies three main aspects: recognition of transgender identities, ensuring personal safety, and providing necessary support. Jenkins encouraged residents to use emergency services when needed and report discrimination to the Westchester County Human Rights Commission.
Westchester County Human Rights Commissioner Tejash Sanchala noted, “Gender inclusion is a bedrock value of Westchester County,” adding that the Commission is committed to connecting community members to resources and enforcing protective laws.
Police support was echoed by Westchester County Police Commissioner Terrance Raynor, who said, "The safety and well-being of every resident in Westchester County is our top priority." White Plains Police Commissioner David Chong reiterated this sentiment, underscoring the city's commitment to protecting the identities of all residents.
Judy Troilo of The LOFT LGBTQ+ Community Center voiced gratitude for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of unity as “The trans community is under attack.” Rachel Simon from the Westchester County LGBTQ+ Advisory Board also expressed support for the campaign, marking Transgender Day of Visibility as a celebration of authentic lives.
Jyoni Tetsuro-Shuler, LOFT Senior Program Manager, highlighted the complex realities faced by the trans community, stating that resilience and mutual support are crucial in overcoming these challenges.
Westchester County reiterates its commitment to providing a safe and inclusive environment for all, irrespective of gender identity or expression.
