Westchester County's Department of Environmental Facilities (DEF) is set to hold a public meeting on February 26 at the County Center in White Plains. The event, scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m., aims to gather residents' input on waste reduction strategies as part of a Waste Reduction Study being conducted in collaboration with consulting firm Barton & Loguidice.

The study seeks to guide efforts in minimizing waste generation and disposal over the next decade. During the meeting, DEF and Barton & Loguidice will present the study's objectives, allowing attendees up to two minutes each for feedback. Due to time constraints, participants are encouraged to pre-register at https://form.jotform.com/250284581440151. Those unable to attend can submit written comments until March 5 via https://form.jotform.com/250485123882156.

In December, DEF launched a Waste Reduction Survey available at https://arcg.is/GDn8u0 or through their Facebook page. Business owners and managers in Westchester are also invited to contribute by participating via https://arcg.is/0aGWTW.

The Waste Reduction Study is funded by an initiative from the Board of Legislators included in the 2024 Refuse Disposal District budget.

Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins remarked: “Westchester County has long been a leader in waste reduction, and we remain committed to finding new ways to improve sustainability. This study will help us chart a course for the future, and we want to hear from residents on how we can continue making a difference. I encourage everyone to attend the public meeting or participate in the survey.”

County Legislator Erika L. Pierce emphasized: “Public input is essential in shaping our policies, and this study is an opportunity for residents to share ideas on how we can further reduce waste... I look forward to hearing the community’s thoughts and comments on how we can expand and improve our waste reduction efforts.”

DEF Commissioner Vincent Kopicki stated: “The Waste Reduction Study will serve as a guide for continuing to reduce the amount of waste we generate... Your input is vital to achieving the goals of the study.”

First Deputy Commissioner Louis Vetrone added: “The County has been very successful at reducing waste but we cannot become complacent... Public participation is an integral part of that process."

Since 2005, Westchester County has decreased its waste disposal by over 27% while maintaining recycling rates above 50%, surpassing New York State's average of 43%. Recent initiatives include food waste composting and textile recycling programs.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently unveiled its Solid Waste Management Plan targeting an 85% statewide recycling rate by 2050. The ongoing Waste Reduction Study aligns with these objectives.
