Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins hosted a Black History Month reception at the Michaelian Office Building in White Plains. The event brought together community members and elected officials from across the county to celebrate the achievements, resilience, and cultural impact of Black Americans. It honored Westchester's deep-rooted Black history and recognized ongoing efforts.
The reception highlighted Westchester's connection to Black history, including its ties to the Underground Railroad and influential Black leaders, educators, artists, and entrepreneurs shaping the county today. Jenkins encouraged attendees to participate in Black History Month events, visit historical sites, and engage in conversations promoting dialogue. The event was both a celebration and a call to action to ensure that Black history remains central to Westchester's collective narrative.
Jenkins stated: "Black History Month is a time to reflect on Black Americans' resilience, achievements and cultural impact throughout our Nation's history. Here in Westchester, we are home to generations of trailblazers who have led the way in arts, education, business and activism. As the first Black County Executive, I recognize the significance of this moment and the responsibility that comes with it."
Barbara Edwards, Chair of the African American Advisory Board, remarked: "Black history is Westchester's history, and I thank County Executive Ken Jenkins for bringing us together to honor and celebrate it. From historical landmarks to the influential voices shaping our communities today, Black history is alive and thriving in Westchester County. This reception is a reminder of the progress we've made and the work that still lies ahead.”
The reception was a tribute to Westchester's Black heritage. Through education, engagement, and advocacy efforts, the county remains committed to honoring Black history year-round.
