Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins has introduced a legislative proposal aimed at expanding the property tax exemption for volunteer firefighters and ambulance service members in the county. The proposal seeks to ensure that all volunteers residing in Westchester County can benefit from a 10% property tax exemption, irrespective of where they serve.
"Volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers are the backbone of our emergency services, selflessly dedicating their time and energy to keeping our communities safe," Jenkins stated. "We deeply value and appreciate their bravery and commitment every single day. By expanding the tax exemption to include those serving anywhere within Westchester County, we aim to support their efforts, enhance recruitment, and retain these essential volunteers."
The current law provides this tax break only to those who serve in the municipality where they live, provided they have at least two years of service. The proposed amendment aligns with recent updates to New York State Real Property Tax Law, extending eligibility to volunteers serving in neighboring municipalities within Westchester.
Susan Spear, Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services, expressed gratitude towards Jenkins for his leadership. She highlighted that "this legislation creates an important recruitment and retention opportunity for volunteer departments." She also noted its public benefit as it leads to significant savings for property taxpayers while appreciating the service provided by Fire and EMS volunteers throughout Westchester.
Martin Gunther, Vice President of the Westchester County Volunteer Firefighter’s Association, emphasized that "the tax break will not only support our pursuit of recruitment and retention but will also positively impact the lives of our volunteers, both firefighters and EMS alike."
Steven Greenfeld, Public Information Officer for Ardsley Secor Volunteer Ambulance and a member of the County EMS Advisory Board, remarked on the county's ongoing support: "Westchester County’s ongoing support of volunteer first responders strengthens our public safety and our communities. These programs recognize and reward the commitment and sacrifice that volunteers make for our neighbors every day."
