County Executive Ken Jenkins released a statement on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, emphasizing the enduring impact of Dr. King's work on justice, equality, and nonviolence. Jenkins highlighted the importance of character over color in defining a person's worth.
Jenkins, Westchester County's first Black County Executive, shared that the day holds significant personal meaning for him. He acknowledged that Dr. King's efforts paved the way for individuals like himself to assume leadership roles.
"Dr. King's work paved the way for so many, including myself, to have the opportunity to serve in leadership positions," Jenkins stated.
He also stressed that while progress has been made due to Dr. King's civil rights efforts, there is still much work to be done.
"It is our collective responsibility to continue the march he started," Jenkins added.
The statement reflects ongoing commitments to ensure access to opportunity and dignity through true equality both nationally and within Westchester County.
