Westchester County has been awarded a AAA bond rating by S&P Global Ratings, marking a significant achievement for the region. This upgrade reflects "the County's increased reserve position, supported by conservative budgeting and strong sales tax revenues in recent years," according to S&P. Notably, Westchester is the only county in New York State to hold this top rating from S&P Global.
County Executive Ken Jenkins commented on the accomplishment: "This is a testament to Westchester County’s thriving economy and sound financial management. Our strong ties to the New York City metro area, conservative budgeting practices, and forward-thinking strategies have positioned Westchester as a leader in economic performance."
S&P noted several strengths that influenced their decision, including robust reserves and manageable debt levels. Jenkins further stated: "With robust reserves, no need for cash-flow borrowing, and manageable debt, we continue to build a brighter, more secure future for our residents. This is a moment of pride for all who call Westchester home."
The AAA rating enhances the County's standing in the municipal bond market by enabling access to lower interest rates on borrowing. This will support various projects such as road repairs and park enhancements.
