Westchester County Executive Kenneth W. Jenkins has signed a Land Acquisition Act to allocate $10 million for purchasing property in downtown White Plains. This move aims to construct affordable housing, marking the first legislation Jenkins has signed as County Executive. The acquired property at 99 Church Street and 6 Cottage Place will support the development of 108 affordable homeownership units and 89 parking spaces.
Jenkins emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating: “We are continuing on our path to create as many affordable housing opportunities as possible for Westchester County’s residents. Every member of our community should have the right to make a home here, and housing needs to be available at a price point that all people can afford.”
Blanca Lopez, Westchester County Commissioner of Planning, expressed enthusiasm about the project: “We are excited to invest in this development that provides opportunities for individuals and families looking to purchase affordable homes. This particular development touches upon several planning goals that we have been discussing for some time now.”
Board of Legislators Chairman Vedat Gashi praised the county's efforts: “As we enter the new year, I am elated that Westchester County continues to prioritize fair and affordable housing, specifically homeownership."
Legislator Jewel Williams Johnson highlighted the significance of this initiative: “I am deeply thrilled and grateful that the first legislative act signed by newly appointed Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins is the approval of an adaptive reuse affordable housing project in my district."
Housing Chair Shanae Williams also supported the act: “As the Housing Chair, I am proud to kick the year off by supporting this Land Acquisition Act that will help create much-needed affordable homeownership opportunities for Westchester residents."
The development aligns with various planning goals such as adaptive reuse of buildings and transit-oriented development near public transportation options.
