Westchester County Executive George Latimer held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Tarrytown Lighthouse to mark the completion of a $3.4 million capital project aimed at restoring the historic structure. The event coincided with the 150th anniversary of the Town of Sleepy Hollow.
Latimer stated, "The Tarrytown Lighthouse is one of the most well-known landmarks in Westchester County, and it is the only lighthouse in the County. This capital project is another example of an existing destination that the County is restoring and refurbishing so that it can be enjoyed again by current and future residents. Having the Lighthouse completed in time to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Sleepy Hollow is a great way to mark this historic occasion."
This rehabilitation project forms part of ongoing efforts by Latimer to enhance Westchester's infrastructure, aiming to improve residents' quality of life. Other projects include Memorial Field's total restoration in Mount Vernon, Miller House in North White Plains, a new Family Court building in New Rochelle, Sprain Ridge Pools rehabilitation in Yonkers, significant investment in Playland Park in Rye, and various other county-wide infrastructure developments.
The lighthouse restoration involved extensive exterior repairs and repainting, addressing caisson cracks, window and door replacement, cleaning and re-pointing foundation masonry, refurbishing interior plaster and painting finishes, restoring wood floors, reconstructing an intermediate landing between bridge and gangway, installing a new security gate on the mainland, and adding new electric exterior lighting.
Built-in 1883 as a "sparkplug" lighthouse with its superstructure resting on concrete and metal caisson, this project restored it to its original form from 1937-1976 when it was still active. The lighthouse was initially built following requests from local steamship companies for navigation assistance through dangerous shoals. It became obsolete after constructing the Tappan Zee Bridge and was taken out of service in 1961.
Westchester County Board of Legislators Chairman Vedat Gashi commented: "The Tarrytown Lighthouse restoration project highlights our commitment to preserving Westchester’s historical landmarks. Thanks to County Executive George Latimer, the Tarrytown Lighthouse will continue to shine as a beacon of Westchester’s rich heritage and community spirit."
County Legislator Margaret Cunzio expressed her enthusiasm: "I am thrilled that the Lighthouse has been renovated and brought back to its pristine condition. It will serve as a beacon of light on the Hudson River in Sleepy Hollow for all to appreciate."
Parks Commissioner Kathy O’Connor noted: "The restoration of the Tarrytown Lighthouse will breathe new life into Kingsland Point Park."
Sleepy Hollow Mayor Martin Rutyna added: "Thanks to George Latimer's leadership...residents can once again enjoy this iconic landmark...That this rededication is taking place during our 150th anniversary deepens our appreciation for its history."
Mt. Pleasant Town Supervisor Carl Fulgenzi remarked: “As we celebrate reopening...we honor not only remarkable restoration but also a symbol of our community’s heritage.”
