The Westchester County Department of Health has issued an alert for individuals who may have come into contact with a rabid black kitten in Yonkers. The kitten was found near Locust Hill Avenue and Overlook Terrace on December 12. Those who believe they had contact with the animal are urged to reach out to the Health Department at (914) 813-5000.

Two individuals who initially brought the injured cat to Yonkers Animal Hospital later returned to check on it. According to Health Department staff, neither person was exposed to rabies and does not require post-exposure treatment. They reported discovering the kitten on the sidewalk at the intersection mentioned above.

Rabies is a deadly disease, and direct contact with the infected kitten could pose a serious health risk. The Health Department advises anyone potentially exposed to seek evaluation and possible treatment immediately. Notices have been posted in the area as a precautionary measure.

Residents are reminded of their responsibility under New York State law to keep pet rabies vaccinations current. Dogs, cats, and ferrets must receive initial vaccinations followed by regular booster shots.

For additional information regarding rabies or vaccination requirements, residents can visit www.westchestergov.com/health or call the Rabies Infoline at (914) 813-5010.
