The Yonkers Police Department has announced its participation in National Police Week, a week-long series of events to honor past and present officers. The celebrations will take place from May 13th through May 19th.

National Police Week was established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, following President John F. Kennedy's proclamation of May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day. The week pays special recognition to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. It has since evolved into a collaborative effort among various law enforcement organizations across the country to honor America’s law enforcement community.

All four Yonkers Police Precincts will host open houses during the week, inviting community members to meet local officers. The Community Affairs Division will be present at different precincts each day, offering free handouts for children and providing information about outreach programs and services.

The schedule includes several notable events:

- On Monday, May 13th, Mayor Mike Spano and Police Commissioner Chris Sapienza will inaugurate National Police Week at the Unity Fountain in front of City Hall at 10 AM.

- On Tuesday, May 14th, an open house will showcase the history of the Yonkers Police Department since 1871 at the George Rutledge Yonkers Police Museum.

- On Thursday, May 16th, the annual Yonkers Police Awards Ceremony and Memorial Service will be held at Untermyer Park & Gardens. The event will honor all YPD members who lost their lives in service, with a special spotlight on Police Officer Martin Geary who lost his life in 1872.

- On Saturday, May 18th, Community Affairs and the Yonkers PAL will host a Community Kids Closet Open House, offering free clothing to Yonkers children up to age 18.

For more information about National Police Week's scheduled events, community members can contact a Community Affairs Division Officer at (914) 377-7293.

The Yonkers Police Department extends its gratitude to the community for their continued support of law enforcement.
