In a recent announcement, the Westchester County Consumer Protection Department has issued a warning to residents as the spring contracting season kicks into high gear. The department emphasized the importance of hiring licensed contractors and avoiding "renegade renovators" in compliance with Westchester County laws.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer stressed the significance of proper licensing for home improvement contractors, stating, “Operating without a home improvement license is a violation of law in Westchester County, so if you’re hiring a contractor to do home improvement work, please make sure you ask the contractor to show you a license from our Consumer Protection Department.”

Consumer Protection Director Jim Maisano highlighted the requirements outlined in Article XVI of County Law, emphasizing that contractors must adhere to these regulations. Maisano reassured residents by mentioning the availability of over 8,000 licensed contractors in Westchester, providing homeowners with a variety of options and support from the department.

The Consumer Protection Department also noted its commitment to addressing formal complaints against contractors and taking legal action against those operating without a license or breaching contract terms. Residents were encouraged to file complaints online through the department’s webpage to ensure accountability in the contracting process.

To assist consumers in making informed decisions, the department offered tips for hiring home improvement contractors and directed individuals to additional resources available on their website. For further assistance or inquiries, residents were advised to contact the Department of Consumer Protection directly at (914) 995-2155 or via email.

As the spring season ushers in a wave of home renovations, the Westchester County Consumer Protection Department remains vigilant in safeguarding residents against potential risks associated with unlicensed contractors. By promoting awareness and providing resources, the department aims to empower homeowners in making informed choices during the contracting process.
