Westchester County Department of Probation will observe National Crime Victims’ Rights Week through April 27 to raise awareness of crime victims’ rights in the region. The initiative aims to amplify the voices of survivors and create a supportive environment for victims. On April 24, the department's Victims Services Unit, along with community agencies, will conduct presentations about the services provided to victims and survivors.
Westchester County Executive George Latimer emphasized the significance of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, stating, “Whether you’re a survivor, advocate or service provider, it is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of the victims’ rights movement, and a time to honor anyone who has been affected in our communities.”
Commissioner of the Department of Probation Rocco Pozzi expressed gratitude towards professionals and volunteers committed to supporting victims. Pozzi highlighted the efforts of those who engage survivors, inform policy, and effect change in Westchester.
The theme for this year's observance is “How would you help? Options, services and hope for crime survivors,” encouraging individuals and organizations to be prepared to assist victims. Additionally, April is recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, with April 24 designated as National Denim Day to raise awareness about sexual violence.
As part of the observance, the Probation Department staff will stand in solidarity with sexual assault victims and survivors by wearing jeans on April 24. One way to participate in National Crime Victims’ Rights Week is by donating essential items for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and human trafficking.
Donations can be made to the Probation Victim Services Unit or placed in the donation box at the Westchester County Courthouse. The community is encouraged to support victims and survivors during this important week.
