Westchester County Executive George Latimer has issued a statement regarding the 4.7-magnitude earthquake that struck the tristate area on April 5, 2024.
According to Latimer, "Westchester County, along with the rest of the tristate area, experienced 4.7-magnitude earthquake around 10:23 a.m. according to the US Geological Survey." He also mentioned, "While we are still checking in with County Departments and municipalities, at this time we have received no reports of damage."
Latimer reassured the public by stating, "Holtec is reporting no damage as well as ConEdison, and the electrical grid and Department of Environmental Facilities (DEF) plants." He advised residents to "check for gas or water leaks, or any structural damage to their homes," while also noting that "Airport operations are continuing uninterrupted."
Addressing the community's concerns, Latimer acknowledged, "Understandably, this is an unnerving experience, but Westchester County appears to have no ongoing emergencies due to the earthquake." He emphasized that while the earthquake was noticeable, it was not unprecedented for the area.
In response to the seismic event, the Westchester County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will remain activated as a precaution. Latimer urged residents to stay alert, stating, "As aftershocks are common following an earthquake, residents are advised to stay alert."
The County Executive's message aims to provide reassurance and guidance to the residents of Westchester County in the aftermath of the earthquake.
