WASHINGTON, D.C — On June 8, 2023, the Supreme Court of the United States released their 5-4 decision ruling that the Alabama congressional map violated the Voting Rights Act by gerrymandering the power of Black voters into one district.
Congressman Jamaal Bowman released the following statement in response:
“I’m relieved to see what’s left of the Voting Rights Act be upheld in the Supreme Court today. What we saw happen to Black voters in Alabama last year was an abuse of power with the goal of destroying our democracy. Across the country, Republicans have increasingly employed racist voter suppression tactics – including gerrymandering congressional districts, stricter voter identification requirements, and heightened barriers to registration and early voting – to maintain their power. We've consistently seen the effects these actions have on undermining Black voters' political power, but no more. This decision is critical in our fight to bring back the full protections of the Voting Rights Act, and we must continue organizing to ensure Congress passes the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. Voting is a bedrock right of every American, and we must protect it.”
