YONKERS, NY – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano issued the following statement on the effects of ongoing Canadian wildfires on New York's air quality. More than 100 wildfires currently burning in Quebec are causing unhealthy, hazy conditions across New York state including in the City of Yonkers. An Air Quality Health Advisory is in effect until Thursday, June 8 for the New York City metro area and lower Hudson Valley according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Health.
“Due to the extreme haze and unhealthy weather conditions, Yonkers Public Schools have canceled all outdoor activities and events. The unhealthy, unprecedented air quality in the City of Yonkers, due to wildfires in Canada, could impact our vulnerable populations including children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health issues. I encourage our residents to stay indoors with the windows closed. If you must be outside, please wear a mask. Organizations holding outdoor activities are encouraged to monitor the ongoing air quality before proceeding with further events over the next few days.”
