The Westchester County Youth Bureau has expanded the reach of the annual Holiday Gift Drive organized by the Westchester County Department of Social Services (DSS). In collaboration with the Westchester County Youth Board, Youth Empowerment Council for Change (YECC), and local My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) partner organizations, the bureau delivered hundreds of additional presents to DSS. These gifts are intended for children in foster care, homeless shelters, and protective services during this holiday season.
Westchester County Executive George Latimer commented on the initiative: “What took place today is a testament to the true meaning of the holiday spirit. It amplifies what has been a beloved institution for twenty years – the Department of Social Services Holiday Gift Drive.” He expressed hope that this collaboration between county departments would become an annual tradition.
Deputy County Executive Ken Jenkins praised the efforts: “What could be better than to have more gifts to share and to bring joy to a greater number of Westchester’s children? I applaud the efforts of our Youth Bureau, Youth Board, Youth Empowerment Council for Change and all the MBK chapters.”
Ernest McFadden, Executive Director of the Westchester County Youth Bureau, emphasized the importance of such initiatives: “By joining forces with our Youth Advisory Board, YECC and local school districts’ MBK partners in this important initiative, we are not only helping to provide tangible items like clothing and gifts—we are also sending a message of hope and solidarity.” He noted that these efforts teach young people about kindness, generosity, responsibility, and community involvement.
This year marks the first collaboration between the Youth Bureau and DSS in nearly two decades. The initiative was led by Ernest McFadden. Donations were solicited through flyers created by the bureau. As part of their civic engagement requirement, 18 Fellows from various local MBK school districts participated in collecting donations.
Leonard G. Townes, Commissioner of Westchester County Department of Social Services, expressed gratitude: “We greatly appreciate the gifts for so many children... Your efforts not only will brighten the lives of children this holiday but also stand as an example of caring and community leadership for your peers.”
Youth leaders involved in today's event experienced both pride in their accomplishments and joy from giving back. Harrison Millan from YECC shared his personal experience with DSS support when his family adopted a foster child: “Emma went from being a stranger to my sister in a single day... Gifts are so important in making children like Emma feel included in the hopefulness of the season.”
