County Executive George Latimer has issued a statement in recognition of Kwanzaa, which begins today. In his message, Latimer extended "warmest wishes to everyone in Westchester County who celebrates this meaningful occasion."

Kwanzaa is rooted in the seven principles of Nguzo Saba: Unity (Umoja), Self-Determination (Kujichagulia), Collective Work and Responsibility (Ujima), Cooperative Economics (Ujamaa), Purpose (Nia), Creativity (Kuumba), and Faith (Imani). According to Latimer, it is "a time to reflect our shared values and strengthen the bonds of family and community." He emphasized that the week-long celebration allows people to appreciate cultural traditions and understand the importance of unity for the common good.

Latimer concluded his statement by wishing those who observe Kwanzaa a celebration filled with "joy, reflection and cultural pride."
