Westchester County has launched its annual Holiday Gift Drive with an event at the Michaelian Office Building in White Plains. The drive, which runs until December 16, aims to collect gifts and monetary donations for over 1,000 children in foster care, the homeless system, and other social services in Westchester.
Donations of new, unwrapped toys suitable for newborns through 21-year-olds can be made at six drop-off locations throughout Westchester during business hours. Stuffed animals and violent toys are not accepted.
County Executive George Latimer emphasized the importance of the initiative by quoting Nelson Mandela: “There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children.” He encouraged residents to participate, stating that their contributions do more than bring temporary joy; they deliver a message of hope and celebration.
Deputy County Executive Ken Jenkins highlighted that every child deserves to feel excitement during this season. He called on residents to ensure vulnerable kids experience a joyful holiday despite challenging circumstances.
Leonard G. Townes, Commissioner of Social Services, noted the significance of the drive for children who lack basic comforts during holidays. He said: “The Gift Drive lets residents tangibly impact their lives for the better.”
Barbara Sabater, founder of the Gift Drive and Program Coordinator for Constituent Affairs at the Department of Social Services, expressed gratitude for all donations received from various community groups and businesses over the years.
Drop-off locations include multiple district offices across Westchester. Monetary contributions are also welcomed via gift cards or checks payable to “Westchester Child Welfare Holiday Fund,” as well as through Zelle/cash transfers.
Questions regarding participation can be directed to Barbara Sabater via email or phone.
