The Westchester County Department of Correction, in collaboration with Aramark Food Service, recently celebrated the graduation of four residents from a culinary training program at the Westchester County Jail. The program, known as 'IN-2-WORK,' is an eight-week course that combines classroom lectures and hands-on culinary training, totaling 40 hours. Participants also learn about kitchen safety in food storage, preparation, and serving. Graduates receive a ServSafe certificate, which is recognized nationally in the food service industry.

Graduates will have access to a web portal for job opportunities, resume assistance, and scholarships for further education through coordination with Aramark Food Service.

Correction Commissioner Joseph K. Spano addressed the graduates by saying: “At our agency, we don’t judge incarcerated individuals. From the moment someone is remanded into our care, we focus on assessment, treatment and the rehabilitation process. I thank and commend you for volunteering to participate in this program and many others offered at WDOC."

Robert Love, Aramark District Manager, expressed pride in continuing their partnership with Westchester County: “Aramark Correctional Services is proud to continue its partnership with Westchester County in offering our IN-2-WORK programming to the residents of Westchester County Correction."

Program participants shared their experiences positively. Dominick Labarta looks forward to using his skills for meal prep or working in a restaurant kitchen. Omar Green appreciated the knowledge gained and mentioned scholarship opportunities that could involve his family upon release. Lyle Long enjoyed the class and believes it aids inmates' successful re-entry.

The graduation ceremony concluded with meals prepared by students for attendees from WDOC, Aramark, and 914 United.

The Westchester County Department of Correction is noted for its comprehensive rehabilitation programs and has received accreditation from several national organizations.
