Westchester County is set to host its final Household Recycling Day event of 2024 on Saturday, November 9. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Westchester Community College in Valhalla. This initiative is organized by the county's Department of Environmental Facilities (DEF) in collaboration with WIN Waste Innovations.

Residents are encouraged to use this opportunity to safely dispose of various household wastes, including properly labeled chemicals, tires, scrap metal, electronics, appliances, and more. Additionally, the event will accept documents for shredding and expired or unwanted medications for disposal.

The process requires residents to place items in their vehicle trunks or backseats and remain inside while staff handle the unloading in the designated drop-off area.

However, certain items will not be accepted at the event. These include non-rechargeable alkaline and carbon zinc batteries—safe for trash disposal—motor oil, smoke detectors, cell phones, explosives like flares and fireworks, construction debris, and hypodermic needles. Waste from businesses or institutions is also excluded.

Further details on acceptable items can be found at www.westchestergov.com/recycling or by calling the Recycling HelpLine at (914) 813-5425.

For those looking to avoid potential wait times at the event, Westchester County offers an alternative through its Household-Material Recycling Facility (H-MRF) located at 15 Woods Road in Valhalla. Open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the H-MRF accepts similar items as HRD events but requires an appointment. More information is available at https://environment.westchestergov.com/facilities/h-mrf or by calling (914) 813-5425.
