Westchester County Department of Health - November 17 is World Prematurity Day

November 17 is World Prematurity Day.

World Prematurity Day is set aside to remember that prematurity is the leading cause of death in children under age 5, and to acknowledge the risks and hardships created by premature birth. Babies who are born before 37 weeks of pregnancy are at increased risk for short- and long-term health problems that may affect their heart, lung, digestive system, brain, hearing or vision. County Executive George Latimer encourages residents to wear the color purple to show support for the March of Dimes, an organization dedicated to promoting healthy maternal and infant birth outcomes, improving access to care and eliminating racial and ethnic disparities.
