Westchester County officials recently honored two members of the Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps for their life-saving actions during an emergency in mid-September. Joseph Abreau and Paul Mullin were recognized for their quick response, which saved a woman's life and prevented a potential house fire.

The incident occurred in the Town of Ossining when Abreau and Mullin were dispatched to assist a woman who had fainted. Upon arrival, they found smoke coming from the house and immediately took action. Mullin attended to the victim while Abreau contacted dispatch for additional support from the Ossining Fire Department. Abreau managed to extinguish an active stove fire using a blanket, preventing further damage.

The patient was later treated at Phelps Hospital's hyperbaric chamber to counteract carbon monoxide poisoning effects.

County Executive George Latimer praised their actions: “Thanks to their swift actions, the victim received the necessary medical attention, and the fire was extinguished before it could spread. Joseph and Paul exemplify the spirit of service that our emergency responders embody, and we are grateful for their dedication to our community.”

Emergency Services Commissioner Richard Wishnie added: “Their heroism serves as a reminder of the vital role our first responders play. They put their lives on the line every day to keep our residents safe, and we commend their extraordinary efforts.”

Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler also commended them: “The swift actions of Joseph and Paul not only saved a life but also averted a significant fire hazard. We are incredibly fortunate to have Phelps Hospital in our community, with its state-of-the-art hyperbaric chamber.”

In recognition of their bravery, Westchester County officials presented proclamations to Abreau and Mullin for their commitment to public safety.
