New York Medical College honors Westchester Health Commissioner with prestigious award

Westchester County Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler has been honored with the 2024 William Cullen Bryant Award by New York Medical College. The award, named after the college's founder, recognizes individuals who have shown leadership in healthcare, science, education, business, or the arts.

Dr. Amler has been serving as the Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Health since 2011. She also holds various academic positions at New York Medical College and has played a crucial role in leading Westchester County’s public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer expressed his satisfaction with Dr. Amler's recognition: “We are thrilled, but not surprised, that Dr. Amler was recognized with this prestigious award." He praised her professionalism and steady guidance during the pandemic.

Dr. Amler shared her gratitude for receiving the award: “I am humbled to receive this honor from my colleagues at New York Medical College.” She noted her pride in initiatives like the Narcan program launched in 2015, which trained over 12,000 people to prevent opioid overdoses.

Both Dr. Sherlita Amler and her husband Dr. Robert Amler received the William Cullen Bryant Award at an event held at New Rochelle's Surf Club on the Sound.

County Legislator Jewel Williams Johnson commended Dr. Amler's dedication: “She has really prioritized service for the residents of Westchester County.”

Robert Baker, MD, president of the County Board of Health remarked on Dr. Amler's leadership: “The public health tripod of vaccinations, a clean water supply and proper sanitation have never been sturdier than under her able leadership."

Dr. Sherlita Amler is known for her extensive experience in public health and disaster management and has led numerous successful initiatives against opiate abuse and Ebola threats across Westchester.
