Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano has extended the city’s travel ban until 6 p.m. on February 23 as a major blizzard continues to impact the area. The decision comes as heavy snow and strong winds create hazardous conditions throughout Yonkers, a city that serves over 200,000 residents in Westchester County according to its official website.

“Travel conditions continue to be dangerous as wind and snow rips through our region. Our city crews are out in force combating very tough, whiteout conditions, clearing our primary roads,” said Mayor Spano. “Roads need to remain open and passable for first responders and essential workers. Please heed our call and remain off the road for the remainder of the day.”

The city remains under Snow Emergency regulations. Alternate Side Parking is suspended for Tuesday, February 24, and Wednesday, February 25, while parking meters will stay in effect during this period.

Regarding waste management services, there will be no garbage collection on Tuesday, February 24. On Wednesday, February 25, regular Tuesday collection will take place but paper recycling is suspended. Normal garbage collection resumes Thursday and Friday.

Citywide closures include the Yonkers Recycling Center and Organic Yard on Tuesday, February 24. All programs operated by the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Conservation as well as those by the Office of the Aging are also closed that day.

No parking is allowed on designated Snow Emergency Routes; vehicles left there may be towed. These routes can be found at www.yonkersny.gov. Residents are advised not to travel so that public works crews—part of dedicated municipal departments responsible for maintaining infrastructure and supporting public health (source)—can clear roads safely.

Free parking options have been provided at several locations including School 25 (579 Warburton Ave), Nepperhan Community Center (342 Warburton Ave), Untermyer Park (945 N Broadway), Hudson River Museum (511 Warburton Ave), Coyne Park (771 McLean Ave), Grinton I. Will Library (1500 Central Park Ave), and Empire City Casino by MGM Resorts (810 Yonkers Ave). All Yonkers Parking Authority lots will follow standard rules and fees.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels such as the Mayor’s Hotline at 377-HELP (4357) or by following @cityofyonkers on social media. For emergencies call 9-1-1; Con Edison emergency line is available at 1-800-752-6633; non-emergency police assistance can be reached at 914-377-7900.

The City urges all residents to avoid unnecessary travel and move their vehicles from Snow Emergency Routes so crews can keep roads safe for everyone.
