The Yonkers Fire Department has completed a plan to provide all its firefighters with handheld thermal imaging cameras, becoming the first municipality in Westchester County to fully equip its members with this technology. The cameras are intended for use in various firefighting and rescue operations.

“This is a significant step toward enhancing safety for both our Firefighters and community,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “These cameras allow our Firefighters another set of eyes in dangerous conditions where visibility can be impaired and will no doubt save lives.”

“This initiative represents a substantial investment in Yonkers’ safety and underscores the Mayor’s pledge to keep the City safe through careful planning and support,” said City of Yonkers Fire Department Commissioner William Fitzpatrick. “Thank you to Mayor Spano for consistently demonstrating the importance of the safety and well-being of our Firefighters.”

The new devices are designed to help firefighters see through darkness and smoke, deliver important incident information, and improve response times. Officers, Truck Firefighters, and Engine Company Firefighters are now using different models of these cameras.

Rescue 1, Squad 11, and all officers have been equipped with FLIR models for search, rescue, temperature measurement, and tactical decisions. Truck Firefighters use ARGUS cameras for tactical operations and searches. Engine Company Firefighters have received SEEK cameras that are compact and lightweight, aiding in fire location as well as serving as personal escape tools if needed.

Yonkers is home to more than 200,000 residents according to its official website. The city features diverse neighborhoods and cultural attractions according to official sources. It provides municipal services through departments such as public works and engineering as detailed by city officials, maintaining infrastructure while supporting public health needs through dedicated services. As Westchester County’s largest city, Yonkers serves residents across its boundaries in multiple communities.

Mayor Mike Spano has served as the 42nd mayor of Yonkers with an emphasis on family support initiatives and economic growth as described by city records.

The Yonkers Fire Department remains committed to protecting both residents and property by responding to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, acts of terrorism, utility crises, and other calls for assistance. The department also focuses on fire prevention efforts along with investigation activities and educational programs about fire safety.
