Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins has acknowledged the efforts of the Westchester County Department of Correction during National Correctional Professionals Week, observed from May 4 to May 10. This week is dedicated to honoring the work and sacrifices made by corrections officers and employees who ensure public safety and manage those in custody.
Jenkins presented a proclamation to Correction Commissioner Joseph Spano, expressing appreciation for the dedication shown by correction employees. He stated, “Each May, we pause to celebrate correction professionals who exemplify professionalism, integrity and strength in a very challenging work environment. It’s a week when we should take a moment to honor the highly trained and professional uniform, non-uniform and contractual partners at our Correction Department for their commitment to duty, to each other, and to the individuals who are remanded into their custody.”
Commissioner Spano emphasized the significance of this recognition week: “This is truly a special week to celebrate and bring awareness to the importance and significance of our profession. At our nationally recognized Department, correction professionals should be commended for striving to improve all aspects of our day-to-day operations and quality of life for staff and the individuals in our care.”
In 2021, with support from the County Executive’s office and labor leaders, a monument was dedicated at the main jail plaza in Valhalla. This monument honors employees who died while serving. A memorial wreath will be placed at this site during National Correctional Professionals Week.
The Westchester County Department of Correction is recognized nationally for its rehabilitation programs and certifications from organizations such as the American Correctional Association.
