The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Westchester County, effective from 11 a.m. on July 16 through 10 p.m. on July 17. During this period, outdoor temperatures are expected to feel close to or above 100 degrees due to the combination of heat and humidity.

In addition, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) has released an Air Quality Advisory from 11 a.m. through 11 p.m. on July 16. The air quality in the Lower Hudson Valley and New York metro area is rated as unhealthy for sensitive groups because of ozone levels, which is considered the fourth most concerning level.

According to NYSDEC predictions, the air quality is expected to exceed an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 100. While the general public might not be significantly affected, those in sensitive groups could experience adverse effects. Sensitive groups include children, teenagers, individuals aged 65 or older, pregnant people, and those with respiratory conditions or heart disease.

Dr. Sherlita Amler, Westchester County Health Commissioner, advised: “Please pace yourself – the heat and humidity can take a lot out of you. Drink lots of water, take frequent breaks from outdoor work or exercise and don’t overdo it. Take time to cool off and spend time in air-conditioned places.”

When AQI levels surpass 100, it is recommended that New Yorkers in sensitive groups limit outdoor activities and watch for symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath. Poor air quality exposure can lead to short-term health effects like irritation to eyes and throat.

NYSDEC issues Air Quality Health Advisories when pollution levels are predicted to exceed an AQI value of 100. Updates are available on DEC and DOH websites.

For those without air conditioning at home during this period of high temperatures, cooling centers are available throughout the county.
