Westchester County officials announced an 18 percent decrease in index crime over the past year, highlighting ongoing efforts to improve public safety. The announcement was made during a joint event attended by County Executive Ken Jenkins and Governor Kathy Hochul. Both leaders reviewed the results of recent investments in law enforcement infrastructure and technology.
The county has received $11.4 million from New York State to upgrade law enforcement equipment and technology. These improvements were showcased through demonstrations by the Department of Public Safety, funded by the state’s Law Enforcement Technology Grant Program.
“Thank you to Governor Kathy Hochul for her leadership and understanding that fighting crime and keeping our streets safe requires both innovation and investment. I’m incredibly proud of the dedicated men and women in law enforcement who work tirelessly to protect the people of Westchester County. As the son of a New York City Police Officer, I know firsthand the toll this work can take — but I also know the immense pride that comes with achieving results like these. An 18 percent decrease in index crime is no small feat — it’s a testament to your hard work, commitment, and collaboration,” Jenkins said.
State data indicates that police agencies in Westchester County saw an 18 percent drop in overall crime during the first four months of 2025 compared to the same period last year, based on current comprehensive figures.
In Yonkers and Mount Vernon—the two Westchester communities participating in New York’s GIVE initiative—gun violence declined significantly. Shooting incidents with injuries dropped by 42 percent, while the number of individuals shot fell by 46 percent. The number of shooting deaths also decreased from seven last year to four this year.
