Westchester County is preparing for an upcoming heat wave predicted to affect the area from Sunday, June 22, to Wednesday, June 25, 2025. The county’s departments are working together to safeguard residents and maintain essential services during this period of extreme temperatures.
The National Weather Service has issued a forecast indicating dangerously high heat and humidity levels across the county. Heat indices are projected to range from 95°F to 107°F, with peak temperatures expected on Monday and Tuesday at around 105°F. A slightly lower index of 99°F is forecasted for Wednesday.
In response to these conditions, the Westchester County Health Department advises residents to stay hydrated, avoid excessive physical activity, and check on vulnerable individuals such as family members and neighbors.
Dr. Sherlita Amler, Westchester County Health Commissioner, emphasized the importance of taking precautions: “Please take this heat seriously. When it is this hot and humid, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and take frequent breaks from outdoor work if it cannot be rescheduled. Take time to cool off and spend time in air-conditioned places. Infants, those with asthma, pregnant women, older adults and those with heart disease or other respiratory or heart conditions should spend less time outdoors until the air quality improves and the temperature cools. Be mindful of possible health effects such as coughing or shortness of breath.”
Amler also reminded residents about the dangers of leaving children or pets in closed vehicles where temperatures can quickly reach hazardous levels.
Residents without air conditioning are encouraged to visit cooling centers if their homes become uncomfortably warm. For more information on locations, visit https://www.health.ny.gov/environmental/weather/cooling/
