Westchester County marked Haitian Heritage Month with a flag unveiling ceremony at the Michaelian Office Building in White Plains. The event was led by County Executive Ken Jenkins and New York State Senator Shelley B. Mayer, who gathered with community members to honor the contributions of the Haitian-American community.
County Executive Ken Jenkins stated, “In a time where diversity is under attack, Westchester County is proud to continue celebrating it. The Haitian-American community is a vital part of Westchester County’s culture and story. We are proud to honor their history and the determination that has shaped their journey. Haitian Heritage Month provides an important opportunity to recognize their lasting contributions to our community and to celebrate their enduring spirit of resilience.”
Senator Shelley B. Mayer added, “I am pleased to join the Haitian community and County Executive Ken Jenkins for a flag raising ceremony in honor of Haitian Heritage Month. This month, we recognize and celebrate the vibrant cultures, history, traditions, and contributions of our Haitian and Haitian-American neighbors.”
Haitian Heritage Month takes place each May and extends the annual celebration of Haitian Flag Day on May 18. The flag itself was first adopted in 1803 as a symbol of Haiti’s struggle for independence. Westchester County participates in this commemoration by acknowledging the significant role played by the Haitian community in enriching its diversity and culture.
