The Westchester County Department of Environmental Facilities (DEF) announced the continuation of its compost distribution program with five giveaway events planned throughout May. The compost is produced at the County’s CompostED site in Valhalla, which processes up to two tons of local food scraps weekly.

According to DEF, this initiative “promotes food scrap recycling, supports local sustainability efforts and gives residents access to nutrient-rich compost made right here in Westchester.” The department previously held four giveaway events in March and April. Due to the limited quantities of compost, residents are required to register in advance for participation.

Residents looking to tour the CompostED facility or seeking more information on food scrap recycling and composting in Westchester can contact DEF or reach out through environment.westchestergov.com. Alternatively, they may call the Recycling HelpLine at (914) 813-5425.
