Westchester County recently hosted a reception to mark Nowruz, the Persian New Year, at the Michaelian Office Building in White Plains. The event celebrated the cultural traditions of Nowruz and acknowledged the contributions of the Persian and Central Asian communities in Westchester.
Nowruz, which means "new day," signifies the start of spring and has been observed for over 3,000 years by millions around the world. Celebrated in regions including the Middle East and Central Asia, Nowruz is a period for reflection, renewal, and new beginnings. It focuses on themes of growth, hope, and family with symbolic traditions underscoring these values.
County Executive Ken Jenkins expressed: “Nowruz is a beautiful celebration of renewal and hope, reminding us of the importance of family, community and new beginnings. Westchester County is home to a wonderful Persian and Central Asian community whose contributions have enriched our County. We proudly celebrate this meaningful tradition and stand with those who welcome the new year with optimism and joy. Nowruz Mobarak!”
Deputy County Executive Richard Wishnie added: “Nowruz is more than a celebration of spring — it is a time for reflection, growth and embracing new opportunities. The values reflected in Nowruz — compassion, renewal and unity — are ones we can all appreciate and carry with us throughout the year. We are honored to celebrate this special occasion with our community.”
The reception provided attendees an opportunity to connect while learning about Nowruz customs through traditional dishes and music. This gathering mirrored the welcoming spirit of Nowruz as well as Westchester's commitment to inclusivity.
