The Westchester County Department of Health has reported that multiple birds at Animal Nation, a Farm Animal Rescue & Sanctuary in South Salem, have tested positive for bird flu. Approximately 60 birds have died or were euthanized due to the outbreak. The facility has been closed to the public since last fall, and officials assure there is no risk of public exposure. Staff and volunteers are being informed as the health department monitors for any symptoms related to bird flu.
Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler emphasized precautionary measures: “The best way we can all be protected is to avoid contact with any sick or dying animals. While there is no risk to the public at this time, it’s important that we all remain vigilant. The Health Department is closely monitoring the situation and supporting those who may have been exposed.”
Guidance from New York State's Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) suggests proper disposal methods for dead birds found on private property. This includes wearing protective gear such as disposable gloves, masks, and eye protection, avoiding direct contact with carcasses and fluids, keeping children and pets away, using a shovel for handling, and washing hands thoroughly afterward. Carcasses should be securely triple-bagged before disposal in an outdoor trash can.
Dr. Amler further advised residents against allowing children or pets near sick or deceased birds and cautioned against direct contact with such animals.
Incidents involving multiple dead birds in one location should be reported to the DEC. Additional information on wildlife health can be accessed via the NYSDEC Wildlife Health webpage.
