Westchester County's Department of Environmental Facilities (DEF) will host two Household Recycling Day (HRD) events on November 2 and November 9, marking the final recycling opportunities for county residents in 2024. The events will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the first at Playland Park in Rye and the second at Westchester Community College in Valhalla.
Residents can dispose of household chemicals, electronics, tires, scrap metal, appliances, and other special wastes. Additionally, documents for shredding and expired or unwanted medications can be brought for disposal. Attendees are advised to keep items in their trunk or backseat and remain in their vehicles while staff unloads them.
The HRD events will not accept non-rechargeable alkaline and carbon zinc batteries, motor oil, smoke detectors, cell phones, explosives like flares or fireworks, construction debris, hypodermic needles, or waste from businesses and institutions.
For more information about what can be brought to these events, residents can visit www.westchestergov.com/recycling or call the Recycling Helpline at (914) 813-5425.
Residents who wish to avoid waiting in line can make an appointment at the County’s Household-Material Recycling Facility (H-MRF), located at 15 Woods Road in Valhalla. The facility is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., accepting the same items as the HRD events. More details about H-MRF appointments are available at https://environment.westchestergov.com/facilities/h-mrf or by calling (914) 813-5425.
