Crime rates in Westchester County have continued to decline, according to recent data from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. County Executive George Latimer credits this trend to the diligent efforts of law enforcement and strong partnerships with community organizations.
The report highlights significant reductions in shootings, murders, and overall crime. These improvements are seen as a reflection of the county's commitment to resident safety.
Data through September 30, 2024, shows that shootings have decreased by 34.5% compared to the same period in 2023. With an average of 2.1 shootings per month, 2024 has recorded the second-lowest number of shootings on record for Westchester County.
Murders have also seen a substantial decrease. As of May 31, 2024, there were three murders reported, down from seven during the same period in 2023—a reduction of 57%. This is noted as the lowest number for any January-May period since 1990.
Overall crime has decreased by 10% year over year as of May 31, 2024. The county now reports a crime rate that is significantly lower than in previous decades—53% less than in 2000 and 33% less than in 2010.
