Standing at Saxon Woods Pool in White Plains, Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins, alongside various department members, provided guidance for a safe 4th of July and summer season. Jenkins emphasized the importance of safety while enjoying the county’s parks and events.
“We want you to have fun, but we also want you to be safe,” said Jenkins. He advised residents to heed professional advice on sun and water safety and make responsible choices regarding driving and boating. The aim is for residents to have an enjoyable holiday weekend filled with positive experiences.
Kathy O’Connor, Commissioner of Parks, Recreation and Conservation, expressed excitement about welcoming residents back to pools and beaches. “Our staff and lifeguards have safety rules set in place to ensure a fun and safe visit for all,” she stated, urging visitors to follow rules and cooperate with lifeguards.
Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler highlighted the need for hydration, sunscreen use, and vigilance around water. “A drowning can happen within seconds,” Amler warned, advising adults to watch over children closely.
Susan Spear, Commissioner of Emergency Services, offered fire safety tips for barbecues and campfires while reminding residents to call 911 in emergencies. She encouraged teaching children how to dial 911 as it can save lives.
Commissioner of Public Safety Terrance Raynor announced increased DWI enforcement during the holiday weekend. The Marine Unit will patrol the Hudson River and Long Island Sound due to expected recreational boating traffic increases. Park Rangers, Police Officers assigned to county parks and pools, along with Special Operations officers will maintain patrols throughout recreational areas.
