The City of New Rochelle Department of Public Works announced on April 3 that yard waste collection will begin Monday, April 6. Residents are advised to place their yard waste at the curb by 7 a.m. on the scheduled collection day, or after 10 p.m. the night before. During summer months, items should be out by 6 a.m.

The announcement outlines several guidelines for proper disposal. Brush and branches must be no longer than four feet in length and no more than three inches in diameter, tied together in bundles without using nylon line, tape, or metal wire. Grass clippings, twigs, leaves, and other loose materials should be placed in open containers or biodegradable paper bags weighing no more than seventy-five pounds.

Certain items such as logs, stumps, stones, dirt, fruit, seaweed, large clumps of grass, treated wood chips, root balls, acorns and other large debris will not be collected by city workers and must instead be disposed of by homeowners themselves. Additional information is available at www.newrochelleny.com/debris.

If a holiday falls on a scheduled collection day during the week, Friday will serve as an alternate pickup day. Yard waste collection is set to continue through the last week in October this year.

The city also reminds residents about regulations regarding gas-powered leaf blowers: they may only be used until May 31 between the hours of 8 a.m.–5 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
