The City of Mount Vernon Recreation Department is set to host a Black History Month celebration on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. The event will mark 100 years of Black history and will take place at the Rotunda in Mount Vernon City Hall, beginning at 5:30 p.m., with showtime scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
The evening’s program includes a live performance by Affinity, as well as music, dance, and spoken word presentations by local youth from Mount Vernon. Quilts created by the Doles Senior Quilting Club will also be on display.
“Let’s celebrate our history, uplift our voices, and honor the legacy that continues to shape our future.”
The city supports a range of programs for seniors and veterans and offers municipal services through departments focused on planning, community development, and recreation. More information about these initiatives can be found on the official website.
Mount Vernon operates under a mayor-council form of government with an elected mayor and five-member city council. The community is served by various departments including those dedicated to recreation—a department that achieved official status in 1931—and urban renewal. Additional details about city services are available at the official website.
This celebration highlights the ongoing efforts within Mount Vernon to recognize cultural heritage while supporting its residents through dedicated municipal programs.
