A local state of emergency has been declared in Mount Vernon to address the upcoming winter storm, with officials prioritizing resident safety. The declaration will take effect on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at 8:00 am.
Residents are advised to stay safe and connected during the severe weather. The city encourages checking on neighbors, especially seniors and vulnerable individuals. “Our priority is—and always will be—the safety of our residents,” according to the official statement.
Due to dangerously cold conditions, Mount Vernon has activated a Code Blue alert. Warming centers and emergency services are available for those in need. Residents are urged to share this information widely.
Emergency contacts include 911 for immediate emergencies, the Mount Vernon Police Department at 914-665-2500, the Fire Department at 914-665-2626, and a heat complaints line at 914-359-1452. Warming facilities include the Mount Vernon Adult Resource Center at 22 East 1st Street and Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital’s Emergency Room at 12 North 7th Avenue.
The city also offers real-time emergency notifications through its CMVNY Notify system; residents can sign up by texting CMVNY to 888-777.
In preparation for snowfall expected from Sunday through Monday, all vehicles must be removed from designated snow emergency routes by Saturday evening at 10:00 PM. Vehicles left on these routes may be ticketed or towed so that road crews can clear streets effectively.
Mount Vernon operates as a municipal government with an elected mayor and five-member city council. It maintains departments focused on planning, community development, recreation—including a recreation department established in 1931—and agencies supporting veterans and seniors (official website). Programs aimed at assisting seniors and veterans contribute to community welfare (official website).
All property owners are required to clear sidewalks within twelve hours after snowfall ends but should not shovel snow into streets as it creates hazardous conditions for drivers and impedes snowplow operations.
City officials emphasize cooperation among residents as essential for keeping the community safe during severe winter weather.
