A Local State of Emergency has been declared in the City of Mount Vernon to enable a swift and comprehensive response to ongoing severe winter weather. City officials stated, “Our priority is—and always will be—the safety of our residents. A Local State of Emergency has been declared to ensure the City of Mount Vernon can respond quickly, efficiently, and with all available resources.”

The city urges residents to prioritize safety, remain informed, and check on neighbors who may need extra help, particularly seniors or other vulnerable individuals. “Residents are encouraged to stay safe, remain connected, and check in on neighbors—especially seniors and those who may be vulnerable,” officials said.

Due to dangerously cold conditions, Mount Vernon has activated its Code Blue Winter Alert system. Warming centers have opened across the city for those seeking shelter from extreme temperatures. The Mount Vernon Adult Resource Center at 22 East 1st Street and Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital’s emergency room at 12 North 7th Avenue are among the facilities available for assistance.

For emergencies, residents are advised to call 911. The police department can be reached at 914-665-2500 and the fire department at 914-665-2626. Heat complaints should be directed to 914-359-1452.

To keep residents informed during this emergency period, the city encourages signing up for real-time alerts by texting CMVNY to 888-777 for notifications regarding weather updates and public safety information.

The declaration also lists designated Snow Emergency Routes throughout Mount Vernon where parking restrictions will apply during snow emergencies so that streets remain clear for plowing and emergency access. Vehicles parked along these routes may be ticketed or towed if they impede snow removal operations.

City authorities stress the importance of community support during harsh winter conditions: “Please check on neighbors, seniors, and anyone who may need assistance. No one should be left outdoors in these conditions.”

The full list of affected streets includes key thoroughfares such as Columbus Avenue from Bronxville to 3rd Avenue (both sides), Fulton Avenue from Parkway South to East 3rd Street (west side), Fourth Avenue between First Street and Fourth Street (both sides), among others covering both north-south and east-west directions within the city.

These actions aim to minimize risks associated with hazardous winter weather while ensuring essential services remain accessible for all residents.
